Feeding the Community
Bird food

One advantage of a planted aviary where birds fly freely and develop into healthy members of the community is that you don't have to concern yourself with an endless list of supplements. Our birds get only the basic foodstuffs that they need without vitamin drops, cuttlefish, grit, salts etc. We use no special formulae as advertised in the magazines. The photo on the left shows the average daily consumption. Run across the photo with your mouse for a description of each part of the feast.

In addition to all of this, the aviary provides an ample supply of grass, particularly for the pheasant and partridge, and insects. Most of our birds have been spotted behaving very strangely until you see the fly or moth or spider or whatever they have caught.

We also give the cockatiels a stick of celery on occasion and soft fruits such as strawberrys and melon get eaten by the softbills when in season.
